Conducting Technique Exercises
Practice the beat patterns with the metronome at various tempos in 4
and 8 bar segments.
1 2 3 4 5 6
4 4 4 4 4 4
Standard Exercises 4 bars
Forte, Piano 8 bars
Crescendo, Decrescendo 8 bars
L.H. Crescendo, Decrescendo 8 bars
Legato, Stac. 8 bars
Absolute clarity of the pattern is the primary goal. You should experiment
with variations that are clearly decided on before beginning the exercise.
The following is a list of some variations you can try:
1. Arm or wrist beats. It is important to note that there is no occasion
in which the wrist and arm are used simultaneously.
2. Varying the size of the beat-i.e. large, small, medium
3. Speed of the beat-i.e. constant, acceleration, deceleration.
4. Variations in how to hold the baton.
5. Different batons
6. Crescendo & decrescendo
7. Use your imagination
The beats are not the points in a pattern; rather, they are the spans
of time between the points. The movement from point to point is the beat.
